”Vem är Bob Dorough? Jag har aldrig hört talas om honom…”

Det är reaktionen jag oftast får när jag berättar om projektet med hans musik, men det lustiga med detta är att jag vet att i stort sett alla i åtminstone Sverige och Danmark har hört honom sjunga utan att veta om det.
Hur jag kan veta det? Det återkommer vi till….

Låt oss först istället tala om det Bob Dorough är mest känd för och mest stolt över: Sitt samarbete med Miles Davis.

Bob är nämligen en av få, om inte den ende sångare som sjungit med Miles Davis band och detta dessutom under 60-talet när Miles utforskade nya musikaliska områden med sin kvintett som då, förutom Miles själv, bestod av Wayne Shorter tenorsax, Herbie Hancock piano, Ron Carter bas och Tony Williams trummor.
De träffades via en gemensam bekant och när Miles Davis blev ”beordrad” av sitt skivbolag Columbia att spela in en julsång till deras samlings-LP Jingle Bell Jazz ringde Miles upp Bob och bad honom skriva en annorlunda julsång. Så kom melodin Blue Christmas till och ni som har hört den vet ju att det är en uppgörelse med kommersialiseringen av julen.
Vid samma tillfälle inspelades ytterligare två kompositioner av Bob Dorough: Nothing Like You och Devil May Care som ju dessutom är titelspåret på Bob Doroughs första skiva i eget namn och med egen musik.

En annan sak Bob Dorough är väldigt känd för i USA är att han i början av 70-talet blev ombedd av reklam-mannen David McCall att komponera musik för att få barn i allmänhet (och David McCalls barn i synnerhet) att lära sig multiplikationstabellen.
Ur detta föddes idén till den tecknade serien Schoolhouse Rock som visades på amerikansk TV på lördagsmorgnar mellan 1973 och 1985.
Här fick barn lära sig både räkna, stava och hur USA fungerar både historiskt och konstitutionellt genom tecknade filmer med Bob Doroughs musik och texter till.

Den första sången Bob skrev till Schoolhouse Rock var melodin om hur man multiplicerar enligt 3:ans tabell.
Denna melodi kallade han Three Is A Magic Number och 30 år senare lånade en mobiloperatör denna sång som uppringningston till deras nät.
Därmed är vi tillbaka till hur jag törs påstå att alla har hört Bob Dorough sjunga.
Det är nämligen honom ni hör varje gång ni ringer någon som har mobilföretaget ”3” som operatör….
Så nästa gång ni irriterar er på den sången, gör inte det, utan tänk på att ni lyssnar på en man som fick ynnesten att sjunga på Miles Davis skivinspelning…

 ”Who is Bob Dorough? I´ve never heard about him”

That´s the most common reaction I get when talking about this project where I want to increase the knowledge of this fantastic composer.
The funny thing is that I know that most people have heard him sing (at least in Denmark and Sweden) without knowing it.
More about that later…

Let´s begin talking about what has made Bob Dorough most famous!

That is whithout doubt the collaboration with Miles Davis.
Davis and Dorough had met through a mutual friend in the late 50’s and when Miles Davis was asked (or more probably told) by his record company Columbia to record a christmas song to their album Jingle Bell Jazz he asked Bob Dorough to write a new Christmas song and it became the satirical Blue X-mas.

During this session (which took place in 1962) two other compositions of Bob Dorough was recorded: Nothing Like You and Devil May Care which also is the title of Bob Doroughs first album in his own name (except an album with music from the musical Oliver)

Another thing Bob Dorough is very famous for in the USA is that he in the beginning of the seventies was asked by PR-man David McCall to write songs to learn children how to multiplicate.
Out of this came the cartoon serie Schoolhouse Rock and it was broadcasted every Saturday morning between 1973 and 1985.
In this serie kids got to learn how to count but also how to spell and how USA works both in history and constitutionally.
The first song Bob Dorough wrote was Three Is A Magic Number explaning how to count in threes.
30 years later a cellphone operator borrowed this song as a tune you heard when dialing one of their users..
So next time you get irritated when no one answers the phone, think about that you´re hearing a man who got to sing with Miles Davis!
It has not happened to so many…
